Tips for Daily Check-Ins
Watch the video of this message here:
We all want a loving and lifelong marriage, right? But sometimes we may feel disconnected and unsure of how to deepen that bond with our spouse. That's why I'm excited to share the power of daily check-ins and how you can make them more effective!
As a pastor, police chaplain and marriage coach, I strongly believe in the importance of daily check-ins. These moments of connection and understanding can happen anytime โ when you first see each other at the end of the day or during dinner. They're essential for building intimacy and strengthening your relationship.
But how can you make your daily check-ins more effective? I've got some tips to help you out!
Tip #1: Ask Open-Ended Questions ๐ฃ๏ธ
Instead of asking closed-ended questions that can be answered in just one word (e.g., "How was your day?"), opt for open-ended questions that encourage your spouse to share more. For example, try asking "Tell me about your day" or "What's new in your world today?" These questions help you both engage in more meaningful conversations and foster emotional intimacy.
Tip #2: Share Feelings and Encourage Your Spouse to Do the Same ๐
When you only focus on events without discussing feelings, you might miss out on a deeper emotional connection. By sharing your feelings and inviting your spouse to do the same, you create a safe space for open communication and empathy. One effective way to share feelings is by discussing "roses and thorns" โ the positive and challenging aspects of your day.
Tip #3: Listen to Understand Each Other ๐โโ๏ธ
Listening is more than just hearing the words; it's about understanding the emotions behind them. To ensure you're truly listening, focus on your spouse, pay attention, and empathize with their feelings. Summarize what they've said and express how you think it made them feel. This way, both of you will feel understood and loved.
By putting these tips into practice, your daily check-in conversations will reach new levels of connection and intimacy, ultimately strengthening your marriage. Remember, effective communication is a skill that takes time to develop, so keep trying and improving!
