Is your marriage struggling? Are you feeling disconnected or like you're just not on the same page as your spouse?
Maybe you have considered marriage counseling, but did you know that there's another option? It's called marriage coaching. In this post, we will explore the difference between marriage coaching and marriage counseling and how they can help improve your relationship.
Understanding the Drift, Disagreement, Damage and Division Cycle: If your marriage is struggling, you may be trapped in what I call the "drift, disagreement, damage, and division" cycle. It starts with drifting apart, having more disagreements, that produce anger and frustration, causing damage to your relationship, and eventually leading to division or separation. This cycle can be detrimental if left unaddressed.
The Approach of Marriage Counseling: Many couples first consider marriage counseling when they realize their marriage is in trouble. Marriage counselors, who are trained healthcare providers, diagnose and treat mental health issues that may be affecting the relationship, such as depression or anxiety. Traditional marriage counseling usually focuses on addressing past issues and working through them together.
Introducing Marriage Coaching: However, there is another option for couples to consider - marriage coaching. Marriage coaching takes a different approach, focusing on the present and future rather than dwelling on the past. A marriage coach like me helps couples assess what they want their marriage to be like and develops strategies to achieve those goals. It is about giving couples the tools and skills they need to overcome challenges and build a stronger, more fulfilling relationship.
The Difference and Benefits of Marriage Coaching: Marriage coaching also differs from counseling in that it emphasizes setting goals and taking action to achieve them. Rather than just talking about past issues, marriage coaching helps couples learn and develop the skills necessary to address current challenges effectively. It focuses on effective communication, rediscovering joy and fun in the relationship, and building a sense of teamwork to tackle life's challenges together.
How Marriage Coaching Works: During my marriage coaching sessions, I work with the couple to assess their current situation and define their desired outcome. We discuss what the couple wants to see happen in their marriage and also explore what they believe God wants for their relationship. I then provide tools and skills like helping them respond rather than react, calm down during conflicts, confront issues constructively, seek understanding, ask for what they need and much more.
Rewriting the Script: A unique aspect of marriage coaching is the opportunity to "rewrite the script." Couples review past incidents, evaluate what worked and what didn't, and identify actions they could have done differently. The tools and skills I provide as we do this together are specifically tailored to the couple's needs, enabling them to navigate future conflicts in healthier and more positive ways. The focus is on building and strengthening the relationship rather than causing further damage or drifting apart.
Importance of Seeking Help: It's essential to recognize when your marriage needs help and not be afraid to seek support. If you find yourself repeatedly trapped in the drift, disagreement, damage, and division cycle, it's time to take action. While some minor issues can be addressed independently, when it comes to significant challenges, seeking professional help from a skilled and experienced marriage coach is vital.
